Not Hearing God? Go Another Way

Like many of you, I hear from God through dreams.

I’ve noticed an increase in the frequency of my God dreams, along with my understanding of their meaning. Thank God! It’s so frustrating to not know!

doorGod called my name

On April 26, 2016, I had a new experience: a direct prophetic word from God in a dream. Holy Spirit has only called my name in dreams twice. I dreamt my Pastor, Tim Franklin looked at me, saying “Kate—Kate Leach—if you aren’t hearing using the front door, go another way. Be willing to do this —-” and Pastor Tim climbed over a counter.

I replied, “I don’t know what that looks like, practically?”

Tim answered by showing me a handmade wooden sign with the words: THAT’S NOT NOTHING, THAT’S MY FRIEND.

I knew instantly (received divine revelation of understanding) those were the words I had spoken to a female friend, Cammie. I will explain what I learned from this dream below.

This dream came to pass on October 6 and 11, 2016 in that I had the opportunity to encourage two women with prophetic words on my various airline flights from Melbourne, Florida to Detroit, Michigan. Both times it flowed so naturally. I used conversational language. To one I prefaced it with “I believe God wants you to know …” but to the second woman, I told her things I knew she needed to hear.

Bogged in a Hearing God Rut

Prior to my April dream, I had been in a spiritual place where I could hear God clearly in my morning quiet time, in a corporate meeting under the anointing, and throughout the day as it applied to me, but not in giving out prophetic words to others. I had gotten in a rut and the Lord wanted to pull me out. I had also been asking the Lord to give me a prophetic word in church through Pastor Tim. In the past, I was used to praying in the Spirit for 10 seconds, going silent, and giving a prophetic word. (My front door, my established entry route to His voice). I was unable to do that on the plane, so while both women were talking, I prayed silently in my mind, asking God to give me a message for them to encourage their hearts. While they talked, I sat quietly listening for the Lord to impress me with something.

To one, the red foil letters on the spine of the book she was holding lit up when I glanced at it and I knew what to say. To the other, ICU nurse Tabitha, I kept hearing the word ‘called’ so I reminded her three times of her calling (which she knew but often we need reassurance). Both women communicated that my words hit the mark. Go God!

Here are the points I took away from my April dream message:

  1. Be open to hearing God in unexpected times and unexpected ways, not just scheduled quiet times.
  2. Do not disregard a word because it seems ordinary or meaningless to you. Prophetic words are for others – all about their encouragement. You won’t usually know if the word has meaning unless you give it.
  3. Be willing to exert effort to hear God for others. A small amount of effort on our part yields big results for another. In this dream, Pastor Tim stepped away for 5-10 seconds to be quiet and hear. I followed that and it worked. I told God that I  was willing to speak to anyone on my trip. Being willing is HUGE!
  4. The instance in the dream where I spoke the words on the sign to a female friend did not actually occur. In the dream, I knew it had – meaning – God is able to impart to our spirit examples that seem so real because He is imparting revelation to us at those times, sealing our instruction (Job 33:16). Think of it as a spiritual download, a software update of divine data. The wooden letters symbolize that hearing God’s voice comes easier as our friendship with Him deepens.

At Rest SOS

The prophetic is such a glorious gift. I urge you to step out conversationally and just speak as He leads. One word came as I glanced at the book in her lap while the other just flowed as natural as breathing. God wants to speak through us to people who are in need. Are you willing to exert some effort? Jesus, your dearest friend wants to use YOU!

For God may speak in one way, or in another,
Yet man does not perceive it.
15 In a dream, in a vision of the night,
When deep sleep falls upon men,
While slumbering on their beds,
16 Then He opens the ears of men,
And seals their instruction.
17 In order to turn man from his deed,
And conceal pride from man,
18 He keeps back his soul from the Pit,
And his life from perishing by the sword. Job 33: 14-18 NKJV

  1. Excellent and very concise article! It is also very encouraging to those interested in going deeper in the prophetic. God is speaking to me in dreams too. I had a “God” dream last night!
