Luxuriating in the Secret Place

Welcome to the second post on the Secret Place which describes what it is, why we want to luxuriate there, and what it does for us.

What: The Secret Place is not actually a place, it is a person, Jesus Christ. Christians refer to spending time with God in the secret place because of Psalm 91:1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

From this we know that the secret place is a hiding place of refuge, a place of protection, as well as a place we can visit or habitate depending on frequency and desire.

The secret place of the Most High God … this phrase fills my heart with expectation and anticipation. It is where we encounter Him, receive enlightenment and endearment increases. Encounter is promised by Psalm 16:11: You will show me the path of life. In Your Presence is fullness of joy, at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore and Exodus 33:14 My Presence will go with you and I will give you rest.

Enlightenment is promised by Psalm 18:28 For You will light my lamp, the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness, Proverbs 25:2, Psalm 19:8 and Psalm 119:130.

Endearment can be words or acts showing love and affection. In the secret place, we discover true companionship.

We build a relationship with each personality of the Trinity, get acquainted with the attributes of Abba Father, learn what pleases Jesus and become true friends with Holy Spirit (John 15:15).

The more time we spend there, we learn secrets that others don’t readily know. The secret [of the sweet, satisfying companionship] of the Lord have they who fear (revere and worship) Him, and He will show them His covenant and reveal to them its [deep, inner] meaning (Psalm 25:14 AMPC).

I love that~ reveal to them the deep, inner meaning of His covenant~ ooh la la!

Have you ever considered why diamonds are valuable? If they were laying on the ground, they’d be worthless. Their value comes from the effort it takes to mine them out of hiddenness. The secret things belong unto the Lord our God, but the things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all of the words of this law (Deuteronomy 29:29 AMPC).

Why Spend Time There? Why do we want to luxuriate in the secret place of the Most High God?

To bathe spiritually and emotionally. I need to cleanse myself of the worldly filth and soulish grime that sticks to my mind, emotions and heart as I live life. There is never a better time to get clean! We are told to approach God with clean hands and a pure heart (Psalm 24:4) so I regularly go into His Presence to get clean. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you (John 15). Come close to God and He will come close to you. [Recognize that you are] sinners, get your soiled hands clean; [realize that you have been disloyal] wavering individuals with divided interests, and purify your hearts [of your spiritual adultery] (James 4:8 AMPC).

It is one thing to visit a place, another to luxuriate by indulging oneself and reveling there. But how do I actually revel in God, you may wonder. We can get intense pleasure and satisfaction by increasing the  amount of time we spend with Him. Ask the Lord to increase your spiritual hunger for Him. The more we seek Him the more we find Him. This paradox is true. Increasing our dedication to seeking God is always rewarded with increased spiritual hunger, spiritual sensitivity making His voice easier to recognize.

The third reason to luxuriate in the secret place of the Most High is that it recalibrates us, returning us to our original accuracy. His Word does this by its purity. The secret place motivates our heart (For this reason we also, from the day we heard of it, have not ceased to pray and make special request for you, [asking] that you may be filled with the full (deep and clear) knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom [comprehensive insight into the ways and purposes of God] and in understanding and discernment of spiritual things, that you may walk (live and conduct yourselves) in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him and desiring to please Him in all things, bearing fruit in every good work and steadily growing and increasing in and by the knowledge of God [with fuller, deeper, and clearer insight, acquaintance, and recognition]. [We pray] that you may be invigorated and strengthened with all power according to the might of His glory, [to exercise] every kind of endurance and patience (perseverance and forbearance) with joy(Colossians 1:9-11 AMPC).

What Else the Secret Place Does: There are even more advantages than those already mentioned! In addition to enlightening us, giving us wisdom, clarity, emotional and mental cleansing, recalibration and internal motivation, it returns us to our first love. But I have this [one charge to make] against you: that you have left (abandoned) the love that you had at first [you have deserted Me, your first love] (Revelation 2:4 AMPC).

It is easy to allow our hearts to harden as we navigate life. Hardening is subtle. Like uncovered food, hardening begins around the edges and works its way to the center. Slowly over time, the human heart becomes less tender to the voice of the Master, more self-centered and less resistant to lies. We need the water of God’s Spirit to keep us malleable, yielded and responsive to God.

We have the privilege to access the Secret Place of the Most High God where we find  refuge, protection and enlightenment as we encounter Him. Our endearment of and to Him increases. We find spiritual and emotional cleansing, renewal, refreshment, increased spiritual hunger and recalibration.

What is your time in the presence of God like?
