Maintaining Joy in Daily Life

Describe three habits that brings you joy.

I find joy in my morning routine of drinking coffee in my favorite periwinkle blue floral chair, pulling the matching ottoman up close to relax my legs and settle in. I love doing this in the predawn hours so the white twinkle lights glisten creating ambiance.

The pleasure I experience in this quiet moment is mixed with deep peace and the comfort found in privacy, routine, and safety. It may seem odd describing this as joyous, but to me, joy is not happiness. Joy is the absence of stress. It is the pleasure that comes from success, good fortune, or a sense of well-being. It also refers to something or someone that brings happiness or delight.

Another activity that brings me joy occurs only in summertime when my pollinator garden is in full bloom. The jumbo zinnias arrayed in fuschia, red, pink, and white point their faces heavenward. It’s delightful. Today I spied a red-bellied woodpecker on a tree limb feeding insects to its juvenile red-belly. My joy meter registered at that sighting.

A third joyous moment is when I hug my adult daughter. Long hugs, deep contentment.

Peonies bring me quiet joy.

Holding my husband of thirty-two years hand. Kissing him. Hugging him. Rubbing my cheek against his clean-shaven face makes me happy.

Finding monarch butterfly eggs on the milkweed I planted. Feeding monarch caterpillars until they J and then pupate. Releasing healthy monarchs into the wild. Joy, pure joy!

Holding a three-week newborn infant on my chest while caressing his tiny, perfectly formed foot.

I’m determined to live my life with joy.

  1. Awww..joy..I have a famous poster hanging in PLAIN VIEW for all my visitors to see..it is called simply “PEACE”…this picture brings me great joy…though the painting is ANYTHING BUT. The painting is that of tumensculous blackened skies, heavy rain fall, lightning, what looks like whipping winds by the trees…the maddening weather screams anything BUT peace or joy…and yet as you stare closely, you will see in the chaos…a tiny mother bird, pearched upon her nest with her babies under her wings and her eyes shut in peace, a nest barely hanging on over a roaring waterfall cliff…she sleeps. NOW THIS is PEACE. THIS IS SHEER JOY. KNOWING IN THE STORMS of life…Jesus has me in the palm of His mighty hand! AND this brings me the greatest of JOYS.

    Joyfully His
