Summers in Florida are scorchers. Ask any of the beet red tourists who needed to hurry their tan along.
One typical summer day in June 2007, my husband and I viewed the Oscar nominated film, Jesus Camp in air-conditioned comfort. The movie depicts events at a charismatic Christian camp, where children spend their summer learning and developing their prophetic gifts while being taught they can “take back America for Christ.” According to the distributor, it “doesn’t come with any prepackaged point of view” and tries to be “an honest and impartial depiction of one faction of the evangelical Christian community.”
Located just outside Devils Lake, North Dakota, Jesus Camp depicts the Kids on Fire School of Ministry run by Becky Fischer. The film focuses on three children who attended the camp in the summer of 2005: Levi, Rachel and Tori (Victoria). The children are shown praying at camp and at a children’s prayer conference held at Christ Triumphant Church in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Bill and I enjoyed the film immensely because we believe in equipping the younger generation to be God’s army. Seeing children filled with the Holy Spirit, learning how to flow in their prophetic gifts and conduct spiritual warfare through prayer was thrilling. Although filmmakers called it “extreme spirituality”, there was nothing extreme about it, to us. It depicted our normal Christian life.
A few weeks later, on July 7, 2007 to be exact, we traveled to Nashville, TN to participate in The Call at Titan Stadium. It was a prayer gathering for the purpose of worshipping Jesus Christ as well as fasting and praying for America on the date 07/07/07. Over 70,000 Christian believers filled the stadium between 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. on this unique date in history, beseeching God to bring revival and spirirual awakening to America and the nations. It was a long, sweltering day worth every drop of perspiration.
In addition to experiencing the joy of powerful worship and prayer that only a corporate gathering can generate, an event occurred that we will not soon forget. From our seats in Section 109, we glanced up to recognize two teens walking by about two rows ahead.
To our amazement, it was Levi and Rachel, the two zealous young evangelists from the movie!
Now age fourteen, we identified their faces immediately. The chance of them walking this close to us, amidst 70,000 people was slim. Knowing this was not a chance encounter, I introduced myself. I shared how the movie impacted us and how greatly encouraged we were by what God had begun in them. I proceeded to give them each an encouraging word which they readily received. Bill and I believe that God wanted to delight our hearts that hot, sweaty summer day by giving us this divine encounter.
Another message inherent in this “chance” meeting was that God wanted me to realize that He can arrange divine meetings, anywhere, anytime … even in the largest crowd. When I need a door of opportunity open, I must remember this episode, for my God will certainly open the right doors for me, in His perfect timing.
After we met these two young “movie stars” and gave them encouraging words, Levi responded, “That was cool.”
Very cool, indeed, Levi. Very cool and refreshing, indeed!
