Camellias, holly trees, and pansies are beautiful plants that love cold weather. These outdoor winter flowers can brighten your garden while blooming houseplants add color and vibrancy indoors.
Why do some flowers bloom in winter? According to the all-knowing internet (ahem) certain plant species have evolved to successfully reproduce by blooming when other plants are dormant. They’ve adapted to withstand cold temperatures and access sunlight before trees fully leaf out in the spring. These plants have evolved features like cold hardiness to survive freezing temperatures and still produce blooms.

Since this is a faith blog, not a science or gardening one, my focus is to draw a correlation to the spiritual aspect of any analogy I use. Winter blooming plants like Christmas cactus and camellia bushes have adapted to not only survive cold temps but to thrive in them!
The exhibition of the fruit of the Spirit in our character year-round enables us to flourish during times of trial and hardship. Maybe flourish is not accurate, but we can show forth buds, grow, and develop when tried.
Snow in scripture represents purity, righteousness, and refreshing. To bloom in winter is to bring forth color, vibrancy, life, and joy out of season. In other words, we expect flowers in spring and summer but do people expect to see us peaceful during tragedy? Are we exhibiting trust in God when our circumstances are falling apart?
YOU WERE MADE TO BLOOM IN WINTER, CHILD OF GOD!
You can adapt to adverse circumstances because the trying of your faith produces patience. “But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing, (James 1:3-4).”
You have year-round access to the Son of all light who shines in your heart and from your eyes, beloved. You have year-round access to the Word of God that is alive, living, and active. God’s Word is our fertilizer, a supernatural growth producer that never passes its expiration date.
We bloom in winter because He blossomed in the harshest conditions imaginable (the Cross).
We carry the risen Christ inside us. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us!
