Nikon in hand, I tiptoed through dewy grass capturing pre-dawn in all her rosy pink and cornflower blue glory.
Click after click of my digital shutter melded with the crickets, giant whirring sprinklers and intermittent tweets. Their delicate morning salutations welcomed me into the stillness. They owned the dawn.
After all, they were present through the night watch and I, the newcomer.

This pre-dawn show was the opening act for Mister Radiance who would soon captivate the stage. This twilight was no competition for her light; its glory held its own.
My heart fully engaged in enjoyment of the moment. Truly this was a reason to awaken and rise from slumber at 6:00 am!
Echoing across my golf course meadow arose the familiar prehistoric call of a single Sandhill Crane seeking his mate. They mate for life, you know. I imagine one waking from its nesting roost, alone, amber eyes searching for its beloved, then shaking its red head in wonderment of her whereabouts.
Photo shoot now complete, I gingerly step from the grass onto my concrete patio, only to notice the two tiny green blades clinging to my feet like souvenirs.
I smiled, not remembering the last time I felt dew on my tootsies. At that moment, I could hear Him whisper, “Meet me in the garden” and I smiled inwardly at His voice. I knew God was there, because dawn is His neighborhood. He is the rising Sun, the great Light that shines so brightly we must shield our eyes from His glare. “O Lord my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty, covering Yourself with light as with a cloak, stretching out heaven like a tent curtain” (Psalm 104).
Although I knew the Lord was present and that it was He who awakened me early with this enchanting surprise, He had not spoken until that moment. I picture Him standing silently, watching us open these daily gifts, observing our responses, much like we enjoy observing our loved one’s expressions when we bestow a gift. Although I had not spoken directly to Him yet, I am sure the Lord could sense my appreciation from my spontaneous “oohhs” and “ahhs”.
You are kissing me awake this fine day. Good morning my sweet King! Such treasures you grant in your garden while the dew is still on the rose.
I heard Him say, Drink daily the dew of the morning, Kathryne Ann.
Yes, my Lord!
Let my teaching drop as the rain, My speech distill as the dew, as raindrops on the tender herb, and as showers on the grass. Deuteronomy 32:2
The king’s wrath is like the roaring of a lion, but his favor is like dew on the grass. Proverbs 19:12
