Unashamed Love

“Jesus Christ is the personification of fervent passion based in confident joy, not ashamed to call me His Beloved.”   Gary Wiens, Bridal Intercession, p.186

The last few days I’ve been mulling over the fact that Jesus is not ashamed of me. Not that I carry feelings of shame, but I used to. In fact, I did for many years. But this week my mind kept being reminded of Hebrews 2:11: “Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.”

The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) means from the same womb, referring to siblings but also refers to fellow Christians, both men and women, as part of God’s family. Let that sink in. The Lord God, King of All was so willing to be in relationship with us that He fully disclosed Himself to us, so that we might know Him exactly as He is. He was not ashamed to hang naked on a wooden cross to display His passion (the Passion of the Christ) for us. Here He is …. the divine One, our Sovereign Savior hanging naked and unashamed so that He might call ME …. His own family. Whoa!

My thoughts keep dwelling on the fact that Jesus is not ashamed to call me His beloved.

Let’s look at it from His perspective. If anyone had a right to distance Himself from us – it would be Him. He could say of us: They can’t measure up to me (nope, no way); They are hopelessly lost in their bad behaviours (yep – humanity is going to hell in a handbasket) or They only talk to Me when they need something, they’re self obsessed, hypocritical and disingenuous.

No, that is not what God’s Word says about His character. It says, I am accepted in the beloved (Ephesians 1:5-6), and Jesus is not ashamed to call me His beloved. God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them (Heb 11:16).

Sadly, few know the freedom in approaching God in this kind of liberty. We want to win the affections of Christ, when we already have them! Believers find themselves motivated by fear than by love, driven to earn the love they have already been given by the joyful heart of God.

Beloved friends, it is time to exchange our old thinking with resurrection style thoughts. God is not ashamed of you. Please choose today to agree with 1 John 4:16, And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.”

  1. I like the verse from Hebrews that started your message and you’re even starting to sound a little like Pastor Tim going back to the Greek text….Very good!
