A Flourishing Finish

Somewhere along my Christian journey, I picked up a thought that stuck like a burr. Often disguised as determination, a deep desire to be something for God and leave a legacy has been part of who I am as long as I can remember. I’m not alone in this, surely. Can I get a witness?

That being said, herein is the misconception.

I thought it was up to me. Make the right choices, be obedient to follow God’s promptings, stay in His Word and work hard to accomplish the dream in my heart.

race-finish-lineIt wasn’t until a few years ago that I realized I was wrong.

Really wrong.

I had it backwards, jumbled, misunderstood the whole idea.

Let me explain. Yes, I believe I have free will and every choice I make matters greatly. Yes, I believe as a Christian, it is paramount to walk in obedience to the best of my ability in the light I have been given. Yes, I stay rooted and grounded in God’s Word because that is my source of wisdom, safety, spiritual nourishment and guidance. Yes, I work hard.

But I have come to not only understand, but to truly know that He (God the Father, Jesus and Holy Spirit – all three of them) – that they – are far more invested and determined for me to reach my potential on this earth than I am.

Long before He laid down earth’s foundations, God had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. (What pleasure he took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son.

He thought of everything, provided for everything we could possibly need, letting us in on the plans he took such delight in making. He set it all out before us in Christ, a long-range plan in which everything would be brought together and summed up in Him, everything in deepest heaven, everything on planet earth (Ephesians 1 MSG).

“There has never been the slightest doubt in my mind that the God who started this great work in you would keep at it and bring it to a flourishing finish on the very day Christ Jesus appears” (Philippians 1:6 MSG).

I wish I could explain how I know but it’s by faith, actually. I know I will walk in the steps He has chosen for me and no one can hinder. Faith opens the doors set before me in the right place at the right time.

I know that God never fails, never quits and does not become weary.

I believe that God arranged events in the lives of Daniel, Abraham, Joshua, Esther and so many others to help them achieve their purpose.

I am absolutely convinced – that God Himself and all His cheerleading crowd of witnesses will supply every ounce of grace, strength, wisdom, resource and encouragement needed, each step of the way – until we finish every assignment we accept from Him, for the glory and praise of Jesus.

Because every assignment has one sole purpose – to glorify Jesus!

Jesus is, after all – the Author and Finisher – of our faith (Hebrews 12:2 NKJV).

Do you have this assurance, beloved?
