My husband loves me extravagantly.
Not extravagant in the sense of lacking restraint in spending money, as in “it was rather extravagant to buy both,” nor in the sense that he exceeds what is reasonable or appropriate.
You see, my beloved enjoys lavishing me with costly gifts. He is not wasteful, he shops sales racks. He loves big and delights in showing how he cherishes me.
When he was courting me in the early 1990’s, his first gift was a blue zircon pendant with matching zircon earrings set in 14kt gold. My birthstone, it was a birthday gift I cherish over twenty years later. He would have flowers delivered to my workplace, generating envious glances from female coworkers. Original love poems were left for me to find. This professor of mine is a true Renaissance man, hands down.
For our 22nd wedding anniversary last week, through the door he walks carrying this massive flower arrangement. It was beautiful, colorful and … big! His handwritten sentiment on the card melted my heart (his desired effect), reaffirming to me that time and age had not dampened his devotion.
Holy Spirit reminded me later how many times my heavenly Abba has used Bill’s extravagance to demonstrate the extravagant love of God to me. I was emotionally broken when we met in 1993 (so was he, but that’s his story, pun intended). Each act of love Bill bestowed, whether in action, words or gifts, came from the heart of God to mend and restore me.
In Song of Songs 2:4, the maiden says of her loved one, “He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.”
When I think of how far Father God went to buy me back from my sin, (behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, 1 John 3:1), I worship. Abba was willing to be temporarily separated from His one and only Son – for me. That anguish produced a global family spanning thousands of years.
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”
Seeing God Through Love
“No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him”(1 John 4:7-16 NKJV).
My Prayer for you
My prayer for my single, divorced or widowed readers, that you find one of whom you can say, “This is my beloved, and this is my friend” (Song of Songs 5:16).
But regardless of your marital status, you are elaborately loved by your heavenly Father and eternal Bridegroom, Jesus.
That supersedes every rose and Gerber daisy which wilt and die.
Thank you for listening to my love story.
Have you known and believed God’s love for you? I’d like to hear about it.
