Ancient Paths

The term ‘ancient paths’ fascinates me. It conjurs the biblical title for God, ‘Ancient of Days’ (Daniel 7:9), referring to His eternality, an attribute unique only to the Lord as the Supreme Being. Roll it on your tongue: Ancient of Days.

Daniel 7:9 reads, “As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire.” This Ancient being, enthroned as King, robed in bright white clothing with hair the same color symbolizes the purity of the Lord. The fire symbolizes purity, intense, consuming passion and judgment. The wheels may also refer to His power and ability to move in any direction He pleases.

So in Jeremiah 6:16 the LORD God says: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’

Our word for today is: Ask God to show you His ancient paths, where the good way of living life is. Then when you find it – walk in it. It really is quite simple.

My question for you, brother or sister – have you truly found an ancient path where the good way is?

Possibly you think yoga is the good way since it is ancient, but is it a sincerely good way that provides deep peace and abiding rest for your soul?

Maybe your thing is Eastern religion … or New Age … or … no religion at all.

But please be warned. If you are not walking the ancient path forged thousands of years ago by the Hebrew prophets, you run the risk of sharing the same fate of those who the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah addressed. They told the prophet, “We will not walk in the ways of your God, Ancient of Days.”

I won’t tell you what happened to these people but it was not good.

But I will tell you this: I have walked the ancient path of biblical Christian wisdom as a lifestyle since 1978. Not as a religious exercise, but as my lifestyle. I made a committed, informed decision then dedicated myself over and over again to follow with intentionality God’s instructions as part of my daily life. I can say without reservation, His ancient path IS THE GOOD WAY which repeatedly provides rest for my frazzled soul. We can argue philosophy but my personal experience can never be shaken or taken.

May His Holy Spirit lead you to personally encounter the Ancient of Days yourself. I promise you will never be the same, once your eyes have beheld His kindness and His love for you – in the exact state you are in as you read this (jammies, unwashed hair, bad habits and sins that repeatedly trip you up).

Won’t you ask for the ancient paths where the good way is?

Shalom!

  1. I’d like to know what happened to those who didn’t walk the ancient paths. Can’t you give us a hint? I really like this post a lot….it is very thought-provoking.

    1. According to The Message version, God smote them with calamity and death. The chapter heading is: “Death Is on the Prowl” if that helps. It reads in verses 16-20: God’s Message yet again:

“Go stand at the crossroads and look around. Ask for directions to the old road, The tried-and-true road. Then take it.
Discover the right route for your souls. But they said, ‘Nothing doing. We aren’t going that way.’
      I even provided watchmen for them to warn them, to set off the alarm. But the people said, ‘It’s a false alarm. It doesn’t concern us.’ {Sounds like people of 2015!}
And so I’m calling in the nations as witnesses:
‘Watch, witnesses, what happens to them!’
And, ‘Pay attention, Earth! Don’t miss these bulletins.’ I’m visiting catastrophe on this people, the end result of the games they’ve been playing with me.
They’ve ignored everything I’ve said, had nothing but contempt for my teaching.
