This Too Shall Pass

Caregiving is hard.

hands-old youngWhether you’re a boomer taking care of elderly parents, a foster parent, the mom or dad of a special needs child … my sleep deprived brain can’t think of more examples, but you get the idea.

I finally made the decision to place my elderly father into long term care recently. An emotional but necessary decision for his safety and the preservation of my marriage.

The stress has affected my sleep patterns. Lying awake remembering things to do, changing positions, checking the glowing red numbers on the bedside clock. Falling asleep at 7:00 pm only to awaken at 2:00 am – hey, I got seven hours sleep! Yay!

What can I do at 2 in the morning? Pray … pray more, sing love songs to God quietly in my favorite chair so not to wake the hubby who needs his sleep to function well at work. Stay off Facebook. Write blog articles like this. Drink herbal tea. Read books. Cuddle my cats until I’m sleepy.

This too shall pass. I am confident this season will not last forever.

This too shall pass.

For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long.  Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever.  So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen.  For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.” 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 (NLT)
